Student Say Farewell to Bennett Middle School

Students at Bennett Middle School said goodbye to their school one last time Friday. Friday was the last day for students at the old school and the new Bennett Middle School will be ready for the first day of school on August 31.

One thing the students won’t miss from the old school is the air conditioning… or lack thereof it.

“It really gets so hot and some of the fans don’t really work. So the air conditioning (will) be great,” said James Jackson, a sixth grader at the school.

The heat can get so bad at the school that students are sent home when the temperature inside gets over 85 degrees.

Teachers say that the heat makes it difficult to teach because it becomes uncomfortable for both teachers and students. The teachers also say the heat makes the kids tired during class.

Among the many things the students and teachers are excited for in the new school is the technology. Wicomico County Board of Education told 47 ABC the new school will have some form of smart board in every classroom.

“We’re going to probably have smart boards or something like that, but I think it’s going to be really fun,” said Raegan Porter, another sixth grader at the school. Porter also said she thinks her teachers are excited for the new technology.

A few teachers at the school, like Mary Laurenzano, tested out the new technology and say it’s great for the kids.

“You will be able to write on the board and it gives a lot interaction with the kids in the class. So it gets them really involved,” Laurenzano said.

Teachers and students also say their excited for the new gym, which will have bleachers that pull that spell Bennett.

“When we give (students) slideshows of what this new school will looks like, when they see the gym they get more excited than any other part of the school,” said physical education teacher Billy Witte.

Students will get a tour of the new school sometime in July according to the Board of Education so they will know where everything is by the first day Aug. 31
