Residents weigh in on confederate flag debate

In South Carolina, tensions are high as some state leaders push to remove the confederate flag from the state house.

The effort comes in the wake of last week’s fatal shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, which killed nine people. Charleston mayor Joseph Riley says the flag should be moved to a museum. This was a similar to stance one Salisbury woman took when we spoke to her on Monday.

“My feelings are that the civil war was over in 1864 and they should have taken the flag down then and it certainly should not be up now.” Says Ruth Epstein.

Meanwhile, another Salisbury resident says the flag serves as a relic.

“It’s a real symbol of our history.” Says Logan Jones, “I don’t think it should be perceived at all as racial discrimination or anything like that.”

A rally is planned for Tuesday at the South Carolina State House to call on the state’s general assembly to remove the flag.
