OC City Council votes to go to court

The city council in Ocean City unanimously voted in a private session to challenge a petition which claims city residents overpaid in property taxes over the past decade.

The “Ocean City Taxpayers for Social Justice” filed the petition accusing the city council of misusing the “Constant Yield Law”, which allows governments to change tax rates automatically without a specific vote when property values fluctuate.

The group claims this resulted in residents paying 40 percent more in property taxes over the past 10 years.

The petition hopes to restore the property tax rate to what it was in 2009 — to help recoup money the group claims residents lost during that time period.
