New Bill To Allow For Undocumented Drivers

New legislation sponsored by Senator Bryan Townsend with bi-partisan support would allow Delawareans who are not citizens to drive legally.

Senate Bill fifty nine would allow undocumented immigrants  to obtain a form of drivers license after meeting the same requirements as licensed drivers.

The drivers would be required to purchase car insurance and pass written road and vision tests  just as others must do before they are allowed to legally drive.

Townsend said that allowing these drivers to get identification  will make Delaware roads safer for everyone.

Wednesday undocumented drivers came to legislative hall to tell their stories.

At first they were not allowed through security since they had no id’s  but Townsend made sure they got in.

“I think its very powerful for people to come and tell their story. It takes a lot of courage to do that and it just made the point that they’re members of our community and it just benefits us all that they can drive more safely and legally. So I think it was powerful and I hope enough of my colleagues agree,” Townsend said.

Townsend told 47 ABC he believes the bill will pass by the end of the legislative session at the end of June.
