MD lawmakers seek to revoke Confederate license plates

A group of Maryland State Senators & Delegates have signed and sent a letter to the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Motor Vehicle Administration requesting that the agencies take steps to remove Confederate flag license plates from the state’s specialty license plate programs.
Senator Jamie Raskin (D-District 20) and Delegate David Moon (D-District 20) have signed the letter, along with others, that will now go to Attorney General Brian Frosh for a formal opinion, asking whether the M.V.A can exclude the confederate flag from license plate production without legislation.
The letter states, “given this understanding, we should not include the Confederate battle flag—the nation’s leading symbol of secession, armed rebellion against the U.S. government, slavery and racism–in our specialty license plate program. “
The proposal will not only halt production of new license plates, but possibly have old, already-issued plates revoked.
