Maryland State Police Works to Diversify Force

A Maryland house legislative panel formed in the wake of the Freddie Gray incident is working to make the Maryland police force more representative of the people they police.
Statistics from the state show that fourteen percent -of Maryland State Troopers are African-American.
While roughly thirty percent of the state’s population is African- American.
Maryland State Police say they do their part to try and diversify their force.
“Well as an equal opportunity employer the department of Maryland state police is committed to recruiting, retaining and promoting employees who are reflective to the states diversity,” said Sgt. Marc Black of the Maryland State police. “In efforts to make that happen Maryland state police will hire any qualified applicant to the position of a trooper.”
Maryland State Police also tell 47 ABC that their recruiters go out to college campuses recruiting fairs and reach out all across different neighborhoods in an attempt to leave no stone unturned in their search for qualified state troopers.
