Maryland governor has advanced and aggressive cancer

(AP) – Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan says he has a “very advanced and very aggressive cancer.”

Hogan says the cancer is B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He says it may be Stage 4, or at least a very advanced Stage 3.

He spoke at a news conference Monday afternoon in Annapolis, surrounded by members of his family and cabinet.

Hogan, a Republican who took office in January, says he’s “shocked” by the news.

He says he’s been feeling good and has had few symptoms, but has tumors, a low appetite and some pain. Chemotherapy treatment is planned.

Hogan says his doctors have told him he has a good chance of beating the disease. He joked it was higher, though, than his underdog chances of beating his Democratic opponent in last fall’s election.

Republican Governors Association Chairman Governor Bill Haslam released the following statement Governor Hogan’s diagnosis:

“We’re saddened to hear of Governor Hogan’s cancer diagnosis, but we know he has the tenacity, courage and strength to confront and overcome this new challenge. Our thoughts and prayers are with Governor Hogan and his family.”

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and Co-Chairman Sharon Day released the following statement in response to Governor Larry Hogan’s announcement that he has been diagnosed with cancer:

“Gov. Larry Hogan is a fighter, and we’re confident he will fight this cancer head on. We are praying for him and for his family for strength in the days ahead,” said Chairman Priebus.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Gov. Hogan and the people of Maryland. We pray for healing and for comfort,” said Co-Chairman Day.

Comptroller Peter Franchot released the following statement regarding Governor Hogan:

“Along with every Marylander, I am deeply saddened by today’s news about my dear friend, Governor Hogan, and I am praying this afternoon for him; his wonderful wife, Yumi; their daughters, Julie, Jaymi and Kim, and his entire family.

However, I’m comforted by the knowledge that the Governor is one of the toughest fighters I’ve ever met, as well as a man of deep and abiding faith. With Yumi and his entire family at his side, I know that he will approach this latest challenge with the same sense of determination and resolve that has made him so successful in business, politics and government.

In the meantime, I stand ready to assist Governor Hogan and our exceptional Lieutenant Governor, Boyd Rutherford, in any way possible in the days, weeks and months to come.”

Today, MDGOP Chairman Diana Waterman released the following statement in response to Governor Larry Hogan’s announcement that he has been diagnosed with cancer:

“I am saddened to hear that my friend, Governor Hogan, has been diagnosed with cancer, however, I am confident that he will take on this new opponent in life with the same tenacity he has shown throughout his life,” commented Diana Waterman. “I ask that all Marylanders keep him and his family in your prayers,” concluded Waterman.
