Health official discusses injuries at Firefly

It’s pretty safe to say Firefly fans came to the music festival for fun.  Unfortunately for some, they ended up taking a trip to a medical tent.

Health officials at the venue say this is inevitable with 90,000 people in attendance. However, they also say they’re prepared.

Brooke Zingone, a registered nurse working at the festival says, “It’s like supply and demand. What the patrons need is what we supply.”

Inside the grounds of the Firefly Music Festival, there are three medical tents located near stages. There are also members of EMS on foot, on bikes, and in utility transportation vehicles. This is all done to help injured fans get the care they need.

Zingone continues, “We have medical staff, nurses, doctors, and EMS providers. Troopers stand by in case we need any of that assistance for the crowd.”

According to festival health officials, most injuries haven’t been too severe, but there are some that they continuously see throughout the day.

Zingone goes on, “A lot of rolled ankles because of people not wearing the right shoes out here. We’ve had some dislocated shoulders and crowd surfing gone wrong.”

However, health officials say they didn’t predict wounds related to mud. The rain in Dover has left many parts of the festival grounds extremely muddy. We’re told lots of people have been slipping and hurting themselves.

Zingone says, “If you know you’re going to go running through the mud, be careful. If you have open cuts, that’s going to get in there and you could get infections. That could cause more pain. We’re going to help you if you need it though.”

Although there’s only one day left of the festival, nurses say it’s never too late to wear sunscreen, proper shoes, and essentially be careful.
