DSP cracks down on impaired driving

Delaware State police today rolled out a new initiative to crack down on impaired driving.

In the first state  impaired driving includes driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs including some prescription medicine.

Officials say the crack down will focus on getting impaired drivers off the streets by using certain troopers who are experts in drug recognition.

“If anybody gets stopped by a trooper or police officer throughout the state and there’s not an odor of alcohol but there’s a detection of some kind of drug that’s hampering their driving, we’ll call these drug experts out to come out and conduct these variety of tests,” said Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.

While prescription drugs are legal  police say drivers should pay attention to labels that warn users not to drive after consumption.

Officials say the driving under the influence of those drugs can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol.
