Wicomico Co. Schools remind parents of high temperature absence policy

One area school district is giving their students relief from the expected heat this week, by reminding parents of their warm weather policies.
Wicomico County Public Schools says that parents of students attending non-air conditioned schools, are allowed to keep their child home if the forecasted temperature for the day is 85 degrees or higher. The absence will be an excused absence under this rule, as long as the student returns with a note stating the heat as the reason.
The policy applies to students at Bennett Middle, West Salisbury Elementary, and East Salisbury Elementary. For more information, contact your child’s school directly.
School officials did add that this is the last year that Bennett Middle will deal with this issue, before moving to the new building in Fruitland for next school year.
West Salisbury Elementary is apparently the next school on Wicomico’s construction list, which will reportedly move student into air-conditioned swing space, during the construction of a new building.
Officials say East Salisbury Elementary does have some air conditioned spaces, which the school utilizes on hot days. They also reportedly pull students from the second floor, and adjust the use of the cooler spaces.
