Walls’ RBI Sends Laurel To Second Round

The two time defending state champions Laurel softball team advanced to the second round of the state tournament Saturday with a 1-0 win over Smyrna. Marissa Walls hit the go-ahead RBI single for the Bulldogs in the 6th, while Regan Green tossed a complete game shut out, with 11 strikes outs in the win.
The teams would be in a pitchers duel early, while both pitchers did it in their own way. Green was simply over powering the Eagles line up as none of the bats seemed to be able to catch up to her. Smyrna would be held to just 3 hits on the day. Sydney Botsch was just as effective for the Eagles though in her own right. Though she finished with just 4 strike outs, she constantly kept the Bulldogs batters uncomfortable, forcing several pop ups for easy out.
The teams would be knotted at 0-0 headed to the 6th where Laurel would get something started with the bats. Alexandria Ullman would rope a shot deep to center and miss out on a homer by just a couple feet. She would settle for a double. After a advancing to 3rd on a fielders choice, Marissa Walls would step to the plate and deliver the only run of the game off a RBI base knock back up the middle. Green would shut the door, as the ‘Dawgs would move on.
