Wallops to celebrate 70 years, with open house

NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility is celebrating 70 years of operation, by inviting the public in.

On Saturday, June 27th, Wallops is inviting residents and visitors alike to get a closer look at just what happens inside of their gates. Throughout the day there will be tours around the island featuring, sounding rockets, scientific balloons, the launch range, and aircraft operations. There will also be activities for the kids, various presentations, workshops, lots of entertainment, and refreshments.

Bill Wrobel, Director of Wallops, said, “Wallops has played a significant role in aerospace research in the United States since its first launch on June 27, 1945.  In addition, the Facility has been a part of the Delmarva community and we want to open our gates and share this legacy.” Wrobel went on, saying “We traditionally have opened our gates to the public every five years. This year’s Open House is lining up to be our biggest and best yet.”

New for this year’s Open House is a 5K run/walk on the Wallops’ runways, along with tours of the launch facilities. Pre-registation is required for both these events, which is expected to open in late May. For more details on the event, visit NASA’s website.
