UPDATE: Police identify suspect in officer-involved shooting

Authorities tell 47 ABC the officer, an 11 year veteran of the Smyrna Police Department, has been placed on administrative leave after a shooting that left one man dead.

Police say they have identified the man who died in the police involved shooting as 52-year old Kenneth Mathena of Smyrna.

Authorities say Mathena was armed during a domestic dispute at the Sunnyside Village Development last night around 11:30.

Upon the initial arrival of officers Mathena was not found by police.

According to police, after a second call from Mathena’s girlfriend police arrived at the residence again and found Mathena holding a shotgun.

Officers say they immediately began yelling at Mathena to drop the gun.

Mathena allegedly pointed the gun towards police which then prompted officers to reportedly shoot him.

Mathena was transported to Bayhealth Smyrna where he was later pronounced dead.
 
The Smyrna Police Department is receiving assistance with this investigation from the City of Dover Police Department as well as the State Attorney General’s Office.
