Sussex Technical HS legislation awaits Governor’s signature

A controversial bill that could turn around some financial issues at Sussex Technical High School is now in the hands of Governor Markell.
This week, the Senate passed legislation that would raise the current property tax rate of 23.5 cents per $100 of property value to 29 cents for 2016, and 30 cents for 2017, to help address the school’s growing enrollment.
By 2018, the rate would go back to 23.5.
The discussion has gotten some backlash from community members and other school districts who feel that the vocational school should scale back how many students they accept without burdening tax payers.
The measure already passed the House and is awaiting Governor Markell’s signature.
