SU Softball Crowned Regional Champs

The Salisbury University softball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan 3-2 Saturday afternoon to be crown Regional Champions. With the win, the Gulls advance to the Supper Regional which will be next weekend.

The Marlins would strike first, plating a run in the first and for a while it looked like that might be enough. Despite giving up that early run, Rachel Johnson would settle in and pitch a tremendous game. SU would be trailing 1-0 headed into the 5th, when Molly Simpson started a rally with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt advanced her to 2nd, head coach Margie Knight went to her bench, calling on Annie Pietanze. The freshman came into the game with just 4 career hits, and no RBI’s, but she would answer the call. A base knock to center would bring in the game tying run. Then in the 6th, the Sea Gulls would get a couple runners aboard for Annah Brittingham, and the junior would deliver a 2 RBI double down the 3rd base line to take the lead. The Marlins would get one back in the bottom of the frame with a sac fly, but Johnson would eventually close the game for the win.
