Streetscape Project complete in Bethany Beach

A project in Bethany Beach has finally reached completion after nearly six years.

On Friday, state and local officials gathered in the quiet resort’s downtown area to officially veil the Streetscape Project.

The idea for the project began in 2009, wit the 2.3 million dollar project beginning in 2013. Since then, it gas produced wider sidewalks, new biking routes and flatter slopes.

DelDot officials say the new construction is in better compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Delaware governor Jack Markell says investments like this are important in helping create a friendlier environment for tourists and residents.

“We need to invest in transportation for purposes of safety, for purposes of construction, for purposes of economic development and so all of these are these are really important.” Explains Governor Markell. “We can talk about it but if we don’t actually have the money to make the investments…it’s just talk and I think people are sick of talk and people want to see something happen.”

Governor Markell says the house has passed an additional 24 million dollars for transportation funding. We’re told it now goes to the senate.

As for as the improvements in Bethany beach, ADA officials are expected to do a final inspection at the end of this summer.
