Stephen Decatur Girls Lacrosse Falls Short Of A Perfect Season
The Stephen Decatur girls looked to keep their perfect season alive while taking on a very good Century lacrosse team. The Seahawks knew this would be a very tough game, but the girls – as always – were up for the challenge.
The Knights got on the board first taking a 1-0 lead, but the Seahawks would score 3 straight goals taking a 3-1 lead. Century put away one goal to make it 3-2, but Decatur responded quickly with a goal of their own to take back the two goal lead, 4-2. However, Century was not done – the scored three straight goals taking a 5-4 lead late in the half. Then, with just fifteen seconds remaining in the first half, Decatur would rally and score a goal to tie things up at 5.
The game would continue to go back and forth in the second half, but a huge difference for the Seahawks was losing Lexie VanKirk due to penalities – seconds later the Knights took a 7-6 lead. Decatur managed to get things tied up at 7 with a goal from Payton VanKirk with just over eight minutes remaining in the game, but Century began to pull away. The Knights put away three goals in the remaining eight minutes while silencing the Decatur sticks.
Century would win the game, 10-7 and would take home the state championship. Despite the loss, Stephen Decatur should be incredibly proud of their accomplishments this season and how they represented the town of Berlin.
