Panthers prevail over Delmar, will play for state title

The Polytech Panthers softball team advanced to their first state championship game since the 2012-2013 season, defeating Delmar 5-3 at Indian River High School Thursday afternoon.

Polytech got off to a fast start when Kailey Perry scored on a passed ball in the top of the first inning. Taylor Pechin then delivered an RBI single just over the shortstop’s head, giving the Panthers an early 2-0 lead. Poly would add another in the second inning when Amanda Waishes would come home on a single by Brandi Dalious. Meanwhile, Shaina Reed would be delivering on the mound. The pitcher had a no-hitter going thru five innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Reed would run into some trouble. After giving up a solo home run to Shelby Miller, Reed would surrender another deep shot, to Alison Pusey, with a runner on to tie the game at 3. With the lead gone, Polytech’s Hayley Friess would step to the plate in the top of the 7th and deliver a huge double to get the inning started. Friess would move to third on a putout, before the play of the game happened. Kailey Perry would send a screamer to shortstop, where Delmar’s Kyra Webb fired home to get the runner. The throw was in time, but when Friess slid, the ball jarred loose from the glove, forcing the umpire to call the run safe. Perry would add an insurance run before Delmar got out of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Polytech sat Delmar three up, and three down.

Polytech will now take on Caravel Saturday at 11 am, at Red Lion Academy for the DIAA softball state title. The Panthers defeated the Buccaneers 2-1 earlier this season.
