Pandas, Mother Nature combine to end Sussex Tech’s season
The magical run that was Sussex Tech girls soccer came to a screeching halt on the turf field at Smyrna High School Wednesday afternoon, when with 19:17 remaining in the second half and Padua leading 4-0, the game was delayed because of thunder and lightning observed by officials.
Although the Pandas came out with crisp passes and sharp shots early, Sussex Tech senior GK Leslie Fazio came up with a number of fantastic saves. Naturally, Padua (15-0-1) would break thru when MacKenzie Scully would find a streaking Arryana Daniels, who would send a beam past Fazio.
Minutes later, Daniels would again be involved in a score, assisting to Gabrielle Villermaux, giving Padua a 2-0 lead with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half. Daniels would get her third point of the game, another goal, with just two minutes remaining in the half. 12 minutes into the second half, Scully would add another goal, pushing Padua’s lead to 4-0.
With storm clouds quickly approaching from the east, lightning was spotted by an official, prompting an automatic 30 minute delay with 19:17 remaining on the clock. After repeated delays for additional strikes, heavy rain began to fall in the area. The game was called final at 8:04 p.m.
Sussex Tech finishes with a final record of 12-4, with two of those loses coming at the hands of the Pandas.
