Lauryn’s Law approved and signed

Governor Larry Hogan put pen to paper and this coming July a new law will require that all school counselors throughout the state of Maryland have specialized training in suicide prevention.

The legislation is called Lauryn’s Law named after Lauryn Santiago. Her mother Linda Diaz says she pushed for the law after her daughter took her own life. Prior to her suicide, Lauryn’s mother had apparently gone to the school counselor asking her to meet with Lauryn. In the following month leading up to her daughter’s death Diaz says the counselor never contacted Lauryn.

Lauryn’s Law aims to have all counselors trained by July 2016.
