Land classification hearing for new Cape Henlopen school

In Delaware a new elementary school is coming to the Cape Henlopen School District, but before it can be built, the plot of land has to undergo a change in terms of how it’s classified. On Thursday night in Georgetown there was a hearing about doing just that.

The land along route 24 currently has an agricultural/residential title but it has to be switched for a school setting. Cape Henlopen’s Director of Administrative services Brian Bassett says this has been a very detailed process already as the district had to go through the state of Delaware to obtain the land in the first place.

Basset says the school is an absolute necessity as the four elementary schools in the district are overflowing with students in some cases locker rooms were converted to classrooms.

Bassett tells 47 ABC, “When you combine that with the enrollment growth we had nowhere to put them. This new elementary will give us a chance to put our students in appropriate classrooms and also prepare us for the next few years of growth.”

Sussex County Council will also consider the proposal in June when they hold another meeting. If the land request is approved Bassett says they will break ground between October and December and the school will open in Fall of 2017.
