Kindergartners not ready for Common Core

Common Core testing has met no shortage of controversy and according to the Common Core state standards initiative, it has been adopted in 43 states. It was implemented in Maryland 3 years ago including to kindergarteners. This year, state officials are saying most of them are not ready for it.

Maryland Delegate David Vogt tells 47 ABC, statistics released yesterday show just 47% percent of the state’s kindergartners are ready to tackle the curriculum. Just last year 83% were deemed ready but that number was based on the old curriculum. Vogt also says Common Core testing is completely optional, but most parents are probably unaware that they have a choice.

Vogt tells 47 ABC, “We’re a trusting society for the most part we put our children in the hands of public school systems trusting that they’re going to do thier job and do it correctly.”

Vogt himself has a son going into kindergarten and believes that kindergartners should not be tested in the first place. He says this testing is measuring these young children to school standards when they haven’t even gone to school yet.
