Home Depot discusses hurricane home prep

Hurricane season is just two days away. 47 ABC has giving tips throughout the week to protect you and your family in case of a storm.

Home Depot held a workshop Saturday to remind folks of the things they often forget when preparing for a hurricane.

Dan Silverman, the Home Depot Store Manager says, “One thing a lot of people don’t think about is covering their windows prior to the event. That’s important as well.”

Representatives with Home Depot say typically, people tend to remember to have a kit with flashlights, bottled water, and batteries, but they forget home prep.

They say boarding up doors and windows prior to a storm, is crucial. They say this can easily be done by using plywood and screwing it into the frame of the window or door.

Keith Fields, the hardware department manager at Home Depot says, “It’s made and treated to withstand various weather conditions and water conditions that you’ll find in a hurricane. You want to choose a treated piece of lumber or plywood.”

In addition to resisting water well, experts say plywood is also sturdy enough to deflect objects that may hit it in a storm.
