Harvesting pinwheels for a cause

With more than 500 reported cases of children suffering physical and or sexual abuse at the hands of an adult in 2014 Wicomico County currently has the highest rate of child abuse in the state of Maryland.

Each April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention Month the Life Crisis Center and the Wicomico Child Advocacy Center plant pinwheels for Protection in honor of each child victimized in the county.

On Monday night, they harvested the pinwheels at the Salisbury Moose Lodge in hopes that the act of picking the pinwheels will boost awareness and encourage continued communication between parents and children in an effort to prevent abuse or neglect.

“Just starting that dialogue and helping the kids understand ok we are learning the difference between the two what is safe touch what is unsafe touch and that we can actually say something and it’s ok to say something, we don’t have to be scared.” Said Courtney Geiser, who founded Pinwheels for Protection.

There are a number of other ways that you can help the victims of child abuse.
It can be as simple as a donation of toys or clothing.
