Emergency crews rescue horse stuck in mud in Clayton

A Delaware fire company got a unique call over the weekend, assisting in the rescue of a stuck horse.

The Clayton Fire Company says on Saturday, around 4:50 PM, they responded to Wheatley’s Pond Road where they found that a horse had become stuck in the mud next to a stream. Officials say the horse, 31-year-old Kentucky, only had his neck, and his rear portion showing from the mud.

In addition to the fire company, the Kent County Special Operations Team responded for additional man power and equipment, and McKinney’s Towing also assisted, bringing their large straps used for up righting large vehicles. Officials say the straps were put around the horse, during the rescue.

The whole event took around two hours, during which heating blankets were used on his exposed skin, and his condition monitored. Once removed, the horse was seen by a vet, and at last report was doing well.

Chief Carrow stated “Even when we get dispatched to an incident that is out of our normal type of response we have a great network of partners to assist us, this was a true cooperative effort and I thank everyone who assisted.”

The Clayton Fire Company expressed its gratitude to all who helped, including Kent County Special Operations Unit, McKinney’s Towing, equipment of the Cheswold, Leipsic, North Bowers, and Hartly Fire Companies.
