Costs of Baltimore civil unrest estimated at $50M

(AP) – City and state officials are estimating the direct and indirect costs of rioting and civil unrest in Baltimore at more than $50 million.
    
The figures come from a federal disaster declaration request submitted by Gov. Larry Hogan, and a city spending request approved Wednesday by Baltimore’s Board of Estimates.
    
Hogan’s letter cites the city’s preliminary economic impact estimate of $30.5 million. That includes decreased spending at hotels, restaurants and conventions, and at Baltimore Orioles games that were postponed or played in an empty stadium.
    
The city’s spending request includes police overtime pay and reimbursements to jurisdictions that sent officers to Baltimore.
    
Hogan says the city suffered eight days of disruption after the death last month of Freddie Gray, a black man who sustained a fatal spinal injury in police custody.
