16 ft. great white shark “pings” off of Assateague

According to data gathered from OCEARCH http://www.ocearch.org/, the  16 ft. great white shark Mary Lee has been located off of the coast of Ocean City and Assateague for the second time in the last couple weeks.

Mary Lee, the mature female great white, has a tracking device attached to her dorsal fin. Researchers tagged her and began tracking her in 2012 off the coast of Massachusetts. When a shark surfaces for about 90 seconds, OCEARCH says they can get a location on the shark.

So far, Mary Lee has been up and down the east coast, from Cape Cod down to north Florida and out as far as Bermuda. When she was tagged in 2012, Mary Lee weighed in at 3,456 lbs.

OCEARCH is a non-profit organization with a global reach for unprecedented research on great white sharks and other large apex predators.
