Wicomico River gets new cleanup tool in Downtown Salisbury

The addition of a new tool in Downtown Salisbury is aimed at keeping local waterways clean.
Salisbury Mayor, Jim Ireton Jr., says officials have installed a new floating debris boom across the East Branch of the Wicomico River. The 42′ boom is upstream from the Route 13 Bridge, where the East Prong of the Wicomico River flows from the City Park into Downtown Salisbury, in a non-navigable section of the river.
According to the report, trash and debris from storm drain outfalls or direct runoff gets into the river, but is then caught in the boom, preventing it from traveling farther down or up river. Public Work employees will now reportedly check the boom daily, and dispose of the debris weekly.
Officials say the debris barrier is permitted by a Maryland Department of the Environment Wetland License.
