UPDATE: UMES students stop traffic, but rally peacefully in Princess Anne

to this — students at the university of maryland eastern shore took to the streets. 47 abc’s kelly rule joins us now live at the school — with the latest on today’s protest in princess anne. kelly? well emily — given what happened over the bridge — the first word of a protest had the school immediately taking action. campus police — along with at least two other agencies came in to monitor the situation. but as you can see now — it’s a much quieter scene and police have since cleared out. the reason — students so far have kept their word on what they said to me before the event started earlier — they are not resorting to violence. protestors chanting track 1 about 100 university of maryland eastern shore students — lining across route thirteen — in protest. their reason — that police violence needs to stop. their message — that they can do so — without causing the same turmoil — that put baltimore under the national spotlight. 23;01;10 we don’t have to be violent to get our voices heard, i feel like people misinterpret that, what protesting is 23;01;20 22;58;24 i think the thought process was there everything that’s going on but everything that happened was went about the wrong way 22;58;31 track 2 for drivers — it was the last thing they wanted to see — at least a ten minute stop in traffic. but maryland state police tell 47 abc — it was peaceful — no violence — or arrests. students started at the u-m-e-s’ student center — holding hands in prayer — then made their way down u-m-e-s boulevard. some students linking arms — chanting — and holding signs — asking for justice for those who were shot and killed by police this year. 22;59;24 i feel like the police violence has been going on for too long 22;59;28 track 3 and for those many students either from baltimore — or with close ties in the area — it was an opportunity to no longer feel helpless — more than two hours away. emotional protestor 23;02;26 the whole school right now is just sad 23;02;29 butt sot 23;02;39 it’s getting closer and closer to people’s homes too so it’s really affecting everybody 23;02;43 track 4 but for these students — it’s just the first step — of a movement they hope will continue to be peaceful — but spark the change they are fighting for. 23;03;01 we need to find a solution for all these things, the police brutalities and the things that people have a problem with 03;08 butt sot 23;03;12 we have to start somewhere if not now then when 23;03;14 now i spoke to maryland state police — after the traffic incident on route thirteen. despite what appeared to be some tension with getting them off the street — they said they were pleased with how the protest turned out. so emily — as of now — students seem to have accomplished their goal of a peaceful protest. great — thank you so much kelly. again that was 47 abc’s kelly rule joining us live at u-m-e-s. students also gathered to demonstrate
