UMES students build wheelchair ramp for local woman

Students with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Department of Technology partnered with the Chesapeake Housing Mission to build a wheel chair ramp for a resident in need Saturday.

This is the second time this school year the students have partnered with the mission group. They brought out their hammers and nails to build a ramp from scratch.

The ramp will benefit fifty- two year old Patsy Kellem of Princess Anne. She suffers from diabetes and kidney disease; and had her lower leg amputated several months ago. This ramp will allow her to get in and out of her home with ease.

Bryan Sarmiento a student at UMES says, “I think this is great for someone who actually needs it. Actually for the construction department and technology this is really good work experience us. It’s kind of a benefit for both.”

The Chesapeake Housing Mission tells 47 ABC they have a backlog of about thirty homes that need to be worked on.

They say anyone who would like to volunteer to help out should contact them through their website. Click here to access it.
