The Laurel Bulldogs Are Crowned Champions

The Clarence Laird -Donnie Price Memorial Baseball Tournament was held on Friday at the Washington High School Baseball Field. There were four teams who participated in Friday’s tournament – the host team, Washington, Snow Hill, Laurel, and Crisfield.

This tournament honors the memory of Clarence Laird and the love he had for Somerset County sports. Just last May, Donnie Price, the son-in-law of Clarence Laird and former WHS baseball coaching staff member – passed away, and he too, loved the Somerset County athletics. This tournament helps allow their legacies to live on while honoring both of their lives.

After the Laurel Bulldogs took down Crisfield Crabbers 14-4 and the Snow Hill Eagles defeated the Washington Jaguars 11-7 – both Laurel and Snow Hill advanced to the tournament championship Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first inning, both teams got things moving in the second inning. In the top of the 2nd, Colby Price sent one deep into left field over the outfielder’s head for the double. Shortly after, Zach Donoway, knocked one up the first baseline – getting by Laurel’s first baseman – who got a piece of the ball, but could not hold onto to it. Donoway’s RBI base hit brought Price home from second base and the Eagles took the 1-0 lead.

Laurel comes back quickly in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Desmond Parker at the place with a base hit up the middle for a single. After a couple of stolen bases, Parker would find his way to home plate after a wild pitch to tie the game up. However, the wild pitches did not stop and Laurel took full advantage taking the lead. The Bulldogs scored 5 of their 6 total runs in the bottom of the second inning.

The Eagles attempted to make a comeback, but it wouldn’t be enough to get the win, as the Bulldogs take the final, 6-5. Laurel is the 2015 Clarence Laird – Donnie Price Memorial Baseball Tournament Champions!
