SU Takes Action on Baltimore Riots

In regards to the rioting that occurred in Baltimore, 47ABC spoke with Members of NAACP Chapter of Salisbury University to see how the organization, students, and faculty are taking action.

Dr. Janet Dudley- Eshbach, President of Salisbury University, sent an email across the Campus Community Tuesday morning, delivering words of encouragement and reminds students that if they choose to “express their opinions” to keep the University’s values in mind. Dr. Dudley- Eshbach sees the bigger picture and tells 47ABC that the University is a place for positive dialogue. She also states that the University provides counselors if students feel the need to talk.

Dr. James King, Associate Professor of English who is active in NAACP, expresses how important it is for students to air their concerns and speak out about the subject matter. He says that these topics lead to “Very difficult conversations, uncomfortable conversations, definitely but necessary conversations which then can spur action.” The action Dr. King speaks of, involves working with the NAACP chapter of Baltimore to have students of SU participate in an organized a cleanup in West Baltimore.

The President of the NAACP Chapter of SU, Julieze Benjamin, explained that they are a diverse organization that strives for the civil rights for everyone and they also do not condone violence. Her advice to her peers is to always be aware, know all of the facts, and understand the right from the wrong.

Alexis Lee, The Executive board member of NAACP said that the organization is looking to be a part of the peaceful protest along with the cleanups that will be happening in Baltimore as well.
