Man who reportedly pulled handgun in Berlin business arrested

A Berlin man is behind bars, after he apparently pulled out a handgun in Downtown Berlin.
Berlin Police say on Wednesday, around 10:00 PM, Officers responded to reports of a man walking with a handgun on Pitts Street. Officers and Deputies from Worcester County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area, but couldn’t find the man.
An investigation reportedly found that the man, 29-year-old Robert Bassett, was at a downtown establishment, when he suddenly pulled a handgun out of his waistband. Law enforcement apparently finally found Bassett, running into another business, and were able to surround the building.
According to the report, as Officers were about to enter, Bassett walked out, but then turned around to go back into the business, while pulling the handgun back out. Police say they then watched Bassett throw the handgun to the ground, inside the business. Officers say they were then able to take Bassett into custody, and found that .45 caliber handgun that Bassett had thrown.
During the arrest, Police reportedly found that Bassett was wearing an inside the pants holster for the gun, and had several containers of suspected marijuana on him. Bassett is reportedly prohibited from possessing a handgun.
He was charged with multiple weapons violations, including carrying a handgun, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a handgun during commission of a felony, reckless endangerment, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Bassett is now behind bars on a $500,000 bond.
