DSP investigating serious crash outside Smyrna

Delaware State Police say they are investigating a single vehicle crash that left one person seriously injured. Police say around 7:55 A.M. Sunday, a 17-year-old driver from Wilmington, was operating a 2002 Jeep Cherokee traveling northbound on Route 1, about one mile south of Black Diamond Road, at an apparent high rate of speed.
Police say for an unknown reason, the vehicle entered the grass median of the road, then swerved back on the roadway before rolling over numerous times. Police say a 18-year-old female passenger in the front seat was not properly restrained, and was reportedly ejected from the vehicle.
Police say she was transported via Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Hospital where she was admitted and treated for serious injuries. Police say the driver and a 17-year-old male passenger from Wilmington, were both properly restrained at the time of the crash, and were taken by EMS to Christiana Hospital where they were treated with non-life threatening injuries.
Troopers say the northbound lanes of SR 1 were closed for approximately one hour as the crash was investigated and cleared. The investigation is reportedly ongoing.
