Delmarva reacts to Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid

Hillary Clinton is running for President in 2016. She made the announcement at the end of a two minute video Sunday afternoon; putting an end to the rumors and starting a different conversation.

Mark Smiley says, “I’m going to vote for her.”

Pat Fenoglietto replies, “She’s a lady and she has her rights like any man.”

James Nutter continues, “She has plenty of experience. I think she’ll do a good job, a lot of better than other people going for president.”

Jessica Scruggs says, “It doesn’t matter who runs for president. They’re going to do what they want to do regardless.”

There are clearly mixed feelings from folks on the shore. Dr. Sarah Surak, a political science professor at Salisbury University says Clinton’s announcement video says a lot about her campaign ahead. She says she’s trying to appear humble and focused on “the people,” rather than the “in it to win it” attitude she had back in 2008.

Dr. Surak says Clinton is the clear Democratic front-runner.

Dr. Surak goes on, “It’ll be interesting to see if folks take seriously other candidates at this point. Hillary Clinton is so far ahead. Polled in February, I think eighty seven percent of democrats said they would vote for her.”

Dr. Surak says other Democrats looking to compete against Clinton may just be fishing for a job if she wins the White House; for example, the vice presidency or a cabinet position.

However, Clinton may have a tough time with Democrats on Delmarva where voters could have ties to other rumored candidates. Those candidates include former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, former Virginia senator Jim Webb, and Vice President Joe Biden.

Mitch Crane, the chair of the Sussex County Democratic Committee says, “We all know him as Joe. This is the type of state where people are used to seeing their elected officials on a regular basis.”

Clinton may not be as visible, but until someone else launches a bid, she’s the only Democrat running.
