Where is Spring?

Did you ever wonder why it is so cold in the Winter?

Over the past several months, we have seen plenty of below average temperatures across the peninsula. We have seen many storms and chilly temperatures during the winter months, December to March, because the Northern Hemisphere receives less sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere.  However, as we approach the middle of March, we get closer to the Vernal Equinox, which is Latin for “equal night”. On the day of the Equinox, both hemispheres on Earth receive equal sunlight; twelve hours of darkness and twelve hours of light.

The cool winter temperatures will be on their way out and will be replaced with more mild, temperate conditions after the Equinox passes. The Northern Hemisphere will begin to receive more sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere, meaning we will have warmer temperatures and longer days on the peninsula. Eventually, the Northern Hemisphere will have its maximum amount of sunlight on the first day of summer. Until then, however, it will be nice to see temperatures in the 40s and 50s!
