UPDATE: Wanted Dover shooting suspect found shot during different investigation

James Wheeler, 25, of Dover

State Police say they have made an arrest in connection to a January 8th shooting in Dover, after their suspect was shot.

Delaware State Police say their Major Crimes Unit has arrested and charged 25-year-old James Wheeler, of Dover, after linking him to the shooting of a 44-year-old man at the North Dover Plaza Shopping Center.

Police say in January, they were called to the Route 13 center near Dyke Branch Road, where a man had apparently been shot in the upper torso. He was taken from the scene by Emergency Medical Services, to an area hospital, and treated for his wounds. Police say during their investigation, Wheeler was positively identified as the suspect, but couldn’t find him.

Then, on Monday afternoon just before 5:00 PM, Troopers were called to a reported shooting in the Rodney Village housing development in Dover. Once on scene, Police say they found Wheeler, with several gunshot wounds to his lower torso. Wheeler was taken from the scene to a local hospital by EMS, where he was admitted for his injuries.

On Wednesday, Troopers arrested Wheeler at the hospital, and charged him with attempted murder 1st degree, attempted robbery 1st degree, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, reckless endangering 1st degree, and conspiracy 2nd degree. He was then ordered to be held on $618,000 cash bail, and presently remains in the hospital due to his injuries under the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Police say they are still looking into the shooting of Wheeler, and aren’t releasing any other details at this time. Detectives however, are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Troop 3 Major Crimes Unit at 302-697-2104 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
