UMES’s Cinderella Run Ends At Championship

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s women’s basketball team’s Cinderella run came to an end in the MEAC Championship game to Savannah State with a 65-47 loss. The Hawks finish out the season with a 14-17 record.

The Hawks and Tigers would find themselves in a shoot out early. TeAmber Burke, Jessica Long, Alexis Hicks, Mariah McCoy and Moengaroa Subritzky would all have it going from the outside early. The teams would be exchanging bucket with neither squad being able to grab much of a lead. Shawnee Sweeney would drill a 3 ball from the left wing to give the Hawks a 25-24 lead with under 5 minutes to go in the first half, The Tigers though would respond and close out the half to take a 30-25 lead into the locker rooms.

Savannah State came out of the locker rooms looking like a different team the second half though. They would take over the game, controlling the game from their pressure on the wings, and their advantage in size down low to quickly blow open the game. The lead would grow to as many as 20 points as the Hawks were never able to get back into the game.

The loss ends the careers of Sweeney and Long.
