Troopers investigating Laurel pedestrian crash

Delaware State Police say they are currently investigating a serious pedestrian crash that occurred Monday evening. Troopers say around 8:34 PM, north of Laurel, Ebony Davis, 29, pulled her Lincoln MKZ over on the northbound shoulder of Seaford Road (Alt. Route 13).

Troopers say the passenger of the Lincoln, Sandra Thompson, 59, Had just exited the vehicle for what authorities say are undetermined reasons. Thompson reportedly began to head across the southbound lane of the highway, when she was apparently struck by a 2007 Mitsubishi Galant, which police say was operated by Rykesh Smith, 24, who was reportedly traveling south on Seaford Road. Police say the collision caused Thompson to strike the windshield of the Mitsubishi, tossing her back into the northbound lane of Route 13.

Police say the Mitsubishi came to a controlled stop on the northbound side, after he tried to swerve to miss hitting Thompson.

Troopers say Thompson was initially transported by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where she was treated for her serious injuries and then later flown to Christiana Hospital. Rykesh Smith, who troopers say was properly restrained, was reportedly not injured in the crash.

Delaware State Police say alcohol, and a combination of dark clothing, in a dark unlit area and not crossing in a designated crosswalk, may have been contributing factors on behalf of the pedestrian, and they will continue their investigation. Police did not release whether any charges will be filed.

Police say the southbound lane of Seaford Road was closed for about two and a half hours while the crash was investigated.
