Tiger Woods chips in at UMES

The golf management program at UMES is unique, in that it’s the only program of it’s kind at a historically black college.

And now one golf superstar is “chipping in” to help this program succeed.

UMES announced Thursday that Tiger Woods plans to donate $10,000 to launch a new scholarship fund in memory of Dr. Charlie Sifford the 1st African-american golfer to play on the PGA tour.

The Sifford Fund will provide need-based scholarships for talented and passionate golf students looking to participate in their golf management program.

Kimberly Dumpson, the Executive VP at UMES weighed in on the gift, saying “These two pioneers in golf are supportive and have been linked to our university in a meaningful way is important to us.”

“Dr Sifford gave back, Tiger is giving back, and now we have the chance to give back too. It’s a continuing journey and we can keep on giving generations after us more of an opportunity.”, said Patrick Harris, a senior in the UMES golf management program.

47 ABC is told that the scholarship will go into effect immediately and could be available for students as soon as the fall 2015 semester.
