The Sea Gulls Women’s Lacrosse Team Downed Cortland State

The SU women’s lacrosse team took the field Sunday afternoon taking on number two ranked Cortland State. The rivalry between these two teams only continues to build as the years progress; last year, SU’s only loss came from the Red Dragons, but the Gulls walked away with satisfaction this year.

The Gulls were off to a hot start going up 6-0 early in the first half, but the Dragons slowly started to inch their way back into the game cutting the lead to just two goals in the first half. However, the Gulls would manage to keep a four goal gap heading into the second half with an 8-4 lead.

Late in the second half, the game was back within just one goal – the Gulls leading 9-8. SU began to take control of the game with three minutes left scoring 4 straight goals and taking a 13-9 lead. Then just under two minutes left, the Dragons fought their way back into the game – scoring 2 quick goals – cutting SU’s lead back to two goals. Despite Cortland State’s 7 goal second half, the Gulls hold on for the win, 13-11.

The Gulls were projected at the number one sport at the beginning of the year, but after just one loss, the title of being the best was quickly taken away. After losing two players to season-ending injuries and missing a couple more girls due to injuries as well – the Gulls have a young squad on the field managing to get things done. This is a huge win for SU and they hope they can continue to build on this win moving foward this season.
