Spartans hold on to top Dover
Sophomore midfielder Lauren Sharp scored two goals, including one late in the second half to give Lake Forest their second win of the season, defeating Dover 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Lake got going early, with a goal from Hannah Fox, then Sharp’s first. Gabrielle Bennetti got Dover on the board late in the first half, with a controversial goal. Lake goalkeeper Daia Daniels appeared to have stopped a shot attempt, only for the referee to come in and rule the ball went past the goal line. This ruling would prove to be crucial because in the second half, Dover would tie the game off a Victoria Groome goal, knotting both teams at 2.
The play of the game came when the game was still tied at 2, and Groome had a clear breakaway shot. Groome’s attempt was turned away by Daniels, who’s play would prove the difference in the game. After the big momentum change, Lake’s Alyssa Santore would put away a penalty kick, and minutes later Sharp would strike again from about 30 yards out, all but icing it.
Lake Forest (2-0) will look to remain undefeated when they take on rival Milford on Tuesday, March 31st. Dover (0-2) will look for win number one on Saturday, when they travel north to take on Wilmington Friends.
