Salisbury Police warning of new unique scams

Police in Salisbury are warning residents of scams in the area. Salisbury Police say two unique scams have been going on not only our area, but nationwide.

The first scam apparently starts when someone calls a business, and asks for the model number of a nearby printer. Soon after, a large order for printing equipment arrives at the business, without authorization. Police say the suspects are looking to profit from unsuspecting business who pay for the illegitimate orders. The suspects apparently claim that the person who gave the printer information initially, ordered the items.

In the second scam, Police say a postcard is received in the mail, with “rebate certificates” for area retailers, and the recipient is instructed to call the toll free number for details. Once the call is placed, the victim is asked to pay a small registration fee with their credit card, which the suspects then uses to make unauthorized purchases. Police say the most recent number was 877-245-0994, but fraud suspects are known to switch numbers frequently.

Salisbury Police are offering the following tips to avoid being a victim:
– Do not provide your social security number over the phone or internet
– Do not provide account numbers to telephone callers. Legitimate businesses should already have your account number and information when they contact you.
– Do not make payments in ANY form to unknown callers. Legitimate businesses have existing processes for payment collection that you should examine carefully before sending money.
– If you have any concern regarding the legitimacy of a caller, do not re-contact them at the number that they provide. Utilize contact numbers that are listed on your existing bills or account documents to ensure that you are speaking with a legitimate company representative.
– If you have questions or concerns regarding a possible scam, contact the company directly, discuss the matter with a responsible party or contact your local police.
