May Dominates As DSU Shocks NCCU

The Delaware State University men’s basketball team pulled off the second big upset of the MEAC Tournament as they shocked top seeded North Carolina Central 63-57. The win advances them to the championship game where they will be taking on Hampton.
The Eagles would jump out to a quick lead in this one thanks to teh hot shooting from their guard Nimrod Gillard. He would connect on two threes and another two shots from the wing for 10 first half points as NCCU’s defense would lock down on the perimeters as well. DSU would hang around though thanks to the a hot shooter as well. Tyshawn Bell would score 14 first half points and carry the Hornets while their big guns of Amere May and Kendall Gray would struggle. NCCU would take a 7 point lead into the locker room, and then begin to open the game up some in the second half. Gillard wold connect on a couple more jumpers as the lead would grow to 12 halfway through the half. That’s when May would go off. He caught fire from the outside, connecting on several threes as well as being in constant attack mode, drawing several easy fouls on the wing. He would score 12 straight points for the Hornets as they battled back to take a 4 points lead with under a minute to go. Follow a Gillard long two, the Eagles would foul Charles Burley who would go to the line for 2. The senior would miss both, as the Eagles would then have a chance to tie. There would be a strong take to the basket but Mrdjan Gasevic would slide over defensively and take the charge to negate the basket. May would be fouled and make 1 of 2 at the line to make it a three point game. The Eagles would then go for the tie but the long ball was off the mark with May grabbing the rebound and getting fouled yet again. He would ice it at the line for the last of his 27 points, 24 of which came in the second half alone.
