Indian River Girls Lacrosse Opens A New Chapter

Spring sports are finally here as teams take the field looking to build on last year’s success.

After 5 pressing years, the hard work is finally paying off this season as Indian River adds a girls lacrosse team for the first time in school history.

Senior Maggie Allison says, “We were kinda nervous about the numbers, but then it turned out 20 girls came out – so that was way more than we had expected. So, it’s just like really cool to see it all happen and see how fast lacrosse is growing.”

While this sport is familiar to some of the girls, to other, it is a brand new ball game.

Freshman goalkeeper, Brianna McGee is new to the sport and although it has been a learning process she has enjoyed it so far, ” Overall, it’s been pretty good, but of course, there’s things that are a little hard.”

Leadership is hard to teach, but luckily the Indians have players like, Maggie Allison, to guide the new players in the right direction.

Head Coach, Kara Voss is very enthusiastic about the group of girls she is working with and loves having the experienced players there for assistance – “We have about 8 people that have played before, so having them working with the girls and you know, watching them, or like how we did today – how were were able to have all the new girls have someone who has played before next to them and working with them has made things so much easier.”

This season’s success will not depend on any scoreboard, and these Indians are ready for any challenge this year may bring. More importantly, they’re ready to take the field as the very first in Indian River history.

Volunteer assistant coach, Anne McBride, says, “It’s a lot of hard work to get to this point, so I think they’re just excited to start playing some games and representing Indian River.”

The Indian River Girls lacrosse team’s season open in on Monday, March 30th – best of luck to the Indians this season!
