DSU’s Comes Up Short In MEAC Championship

The Delaware State University men’s basketball’s season came to an end Saturday with a disappointing 82-61 loss to Hampton in the MEAC Championship game. The Hornets finish out the year with a 18-17 overall record.

The Hornets would come out of the gates on fire from the field. Amere May would find the touch from the outside, connecting on a couple jumpers as well as Kendall Gray would assert himself down low. DSU quickly built up a 13-4 lead and looked to be on their way to a good game. The Pirates though would answer with a 11-2 run to come back to tie up the game. The Hornets were troubled by the limited mobility of starting point guard Kendal Williams who was still nursing a sprained ankle. The teams would then exchange buckets the rest of the half as they would head into halftime tied at 32 a piece. The second half though, everything changed. The Pirates would open the half on a big run and quickly open up a double digit lead. The Hornets would try and battle their way back, again led by May. After a couple straight 3’s, his team would climb back within single digits. Todd Hughes would also get into the scoring action, while Caesar Rodney grad Tyshawn Bell would also hit a couple big jumpers to get his team within 4 with a 5 minutes left. The Pirates would take over from there and blow this one open. Free throws down the stretch made the final score not represent how close this game really was.

The loss ends the career of seniors Gray, May, Charles Burley, and Williams.
