DSU Men’s Basketball Survives Late Push From Savannah St.

The Delaware State University Men’s Basketball team survived and advanced Monday night when they defeated Savannah St. 64-58. The Hornets now advance to play Howard on Thursday.

The teams would be in a close battle early on. The hot hand of Amere May would keep the Hornets within striking distance as the Tigers began to grab a small lead. Then all of the Hornets team collectively held their breathe as starting point guard Kendal Williams went down with a sprained ankle, and would not return. May continued his hot shooting, finishing with 11 points in the first half to help the Hornets get within 1 point at the break. In the second half, DSU would begin to assert their will more as Kendall Gray got into the mix with a few big put backs, and grabbing every rebound that came near him. It would be a historic night for the Polytech grad as he eclipsed 1,000 points and 800 rebounds for his career. The game would remain tight til the Hornets would seemingly put it away with an 8 point lead with a minute and a half to go. DSU however would miss the front of of three straight 1 and 1 free throws, allowing the Tigers to climb back within three. After a lay up made it a 1 point game, Savannah St. would get a steal and attack the basket, missing the lay in. Gray would corral the rebound, but turnover the outlet pass. The Tigers would attack the hole again but this time May would come down with it, and hit free throws down the stretch to ice it.
