Woodbridge Holds Off Laurel In Closing Minute
In a rivalry battle of Henlopen South teams Friday night, the Woodbridge High School boy’s basketball team held off a strong Laurel comeback late in the fourth quarter to take a 61-55 victory. The Raiders improve to 10-9, while the Bulldogs fall to 12-5.
It was a back-and-forth battle for most of the first quarter, but eventually it would be Woodbridge who would take the lead through the first eight minutes, 11-8, and wouldn’t surrender it for a majority of the game.
With a 22-20 advantage in favor of the Raiders at half, Woodbridge’s Randy Dupont and Laurel’s Gary Warren both paced their squads with 10 points.
Bringing the momentum into the second half, the Raiders maintained the lead throughout the third quarter, but the Bulldogs wouldn’t go away, finally reclaiming the lead with five minutes left in the final quarter, 43-42, off a Reggie Green strong take to the rim.
Trading baskets the next few possessions, Randy Dupont started getting more touches and making them count in the closing minutes, including a three from the left corner to put the Raiders up four with under two minutes left.
Seeing several opportunities down the stretch down just one point, the Bulldogs couldn’t get into the rim to finish it and the Raiders would hit their free throws to seal up the 61-55 victory.
Dupont led all scorers with 25 for the game, while Warren paced the Bulldogs with 17 points.
Woodbridge heads on the road for its final game of the regular season at Caesar Rodney on Tuesday at 7:15, while Laurel continues its road series on Tuesday at Lake Forest for a 6:15 tip.
