Winter driving do’s and don’ts

Snow, freezing rain, and other icy hazards. Like it or not frozen precipitation is a part of winter and it could throw a wrench in your daily travels.
Especially when you wake up to find your car encased in ice.
“A lot of people try to go to work in the morning before that glass is completely free and ready to see through.” Said David Bierman of Peninsula Total Car Care.
Bierman also says when it comes to getting all the ice off, stay away from the water.
Hot or cold, it could crack your windshield.
Instead, use the product specifically made for the job.
“I would spray it down with a commercial de-icer, I would start the vehicle up and let that de-frost work and keep that heat on.”
Bierman also recommends changing out windshield wash fluid from summer to winter.
If not it could freeze.
If you don’t change it, adding a bit of rubbing alcohol could protect against freezing.
As for the wipers themselves, turning them on before the ice is cleared, could end up doing more damage.
Bierman warns about turning the wipers on prematurely. He said, “If you turned on the windshield wipers before they were un-thawed from the windshield it would potentially damage the windshield motor itself.”
A clear line of vision is only half the battle for driving through tough conditions.
The other half is on the surface itself.
