WiHi Tops Parkside, Takes Control Of Bayside
The Wicomico high school boys basketball team continues to prove wrong the doubters, as they pulled out another huge win Tuesday night, defeating cross town rival Parkside to nearly clinch the Bayside South title. The win improves the Indians to 16-1, while the loss drops the Rams to 14-3.
The Rams would jump out to a quick lead after Juwan Williams hit a three followed by a Keante Kelly lay in. The Indians would quickly respond led by Torrey Brittingham. The junior would connect on shots from the outside, while also scoring in transition to take a small lead into half time. The teams would continue to battle in the third while Colen Gaynor would start to connect on mid range jumpers to help the Rams fight within 1. As time wore down in the quarter, Nelson Brown would drive to the rack and get a lay up to give the Indians a 3 point lead headed to the 4th. There the teams would again be tight before Dajour Diggs was called for his 5th foul with 3:12 left to go off a tough blocking call. WiHi would connect on free throws to take a small lead as time began to wind down. Tied game with under a minute to go, Brittingham would connect on the biggest shot of the night, knocking down a jumper just inside the three point line to give WiHi a 2 point lead. The Rams would be forced to foul after Gaynor couldn’t get a tough turn around to go. Brown would make his first, miss his second but follow his shot for a rebound and put back to give the Indians a 5 point lead with 30 seconds left. That proved to be too much for Parkside to overcome.
Brittingham finished with a game high 23 points, while Lionel Batson added 8 points and 11 rebounds and Brown finished with 15 points. Parkside was led by Gaynor’s 15, while Gary Bridell added 9 and Williams finished with 7.
WiHi returns to action this Thursday when they travel to Mardela, while Parkside returns to the court Thursday when they host Pocomoke.
